Tuesday, July 29: Ask & Ask Again

All Day

The day started after a bumpy night to a floor that was the wrong floor. Then a new doc said something. Then the (also new) dietitian said something. Things that contradicted what J & A have been told the last 10 days.

What was a possible Thursday or Friday discharge turned into “Do you want to go today or tomorrow?” Caught off guard, J chose the latter. And so began a day of texting and calling between J and A and me. Lists of questions and sentences that started with: “But I thought we were told…,” and “Didn’t so-n-so say…?” or “Wait, why?” and “Be sure to ask this:…” and sometimes “Let’s ask so-n-so; we trust her.”

I’m saying that because if you ever find yourself in a similar situation, it’s normal and it’s okay to pellet the staff with questions questions questions.

Questions that were asked of Dr. X and then again of Dr. Y, and then Nurse Z, just to verify a consistent thread. It wasn’t consistent on some topics.

The wife of my son was vigilant to the end…PRAISE GOD for it! It’s not easy to advocate for yourself or a loved one in some medical situations. But no one cares more than you. Ask. Then ask again. Write down the question and the answer. Record the conversation for clarity. Video home-care instructions in case you forget.

Ask. Ask again. And again…until there is peace.

And let the peace (soul harmony which comes) from Christ rule (act as umpire continually) in your hearts [deciding and settling with finality all questions that arise in your minds, in that peaceful state] to which as [members of Christ’s] one body you were also called [to live]. And be thankful (appreciative), [giving praise to God always].
